An EF86 was famously used as the input stage for the early Vox AC30s, but it Unfortunately, for some reason preamp pentode data sheets always seem to give example voltages that are...
Mar 07, 2013 · I believe that both the AC30 and the AC15 are modeled on the 12AX7 side of the circuits, and the Matchless model is a Chieftain, not a DC30, so it's an 12AX7 preamp as well... The Hot Cat model is also based on a 12AX7 preamp, the Dr. Z is also a 12AX7, and those are the only Voxish flavors in the box...

Our newest version of the EF86 board has been slightly revised to accept 6922, 6DJ8, 7308, and 6CG7 in the phase inverter position as well as 12AU7, 12BH7, and ECC99 that were previously supported. A 6AU6 version of the board is also available but does not support 6922, 6DJ8, 7308, or 6CG7.
The EF86 or 6267 is a miniature 9-pin high gain (185mu) single pentode tube. It has a 6.3v heater filament and uses a 200mA heater circuit. It is used in a some vintage guitar preamps such a the early Vox AC series, and remains in limited use today, mostly in boutique style guitar amps.
The preamp clips at 20mV input, for a gain of 60dB @1KHz - 50uV output harmonic noise (mostly 60Hz and 20dB less 3rd harmonic at 180Hz), the equivalent of 5nV harmonic noise voltage at input. - Zero caps in the signal path (except for the optional cap at the preamp output). Tube Depot carries a selection of EF86 / 6267 Pre Amp Vacuum Tubes. New & NOS pre amp compatible tubes from Electro-Harmonix, JJ, Amperex & other brands!

$379.00 The de Lisle Eighty-Sixed is a tube preamp born of our unique amplifier designs. The tube line up includes an EF86 pentode fronted by a 12AX7 twin-triode. This arrangement allows the true character of the pentode to be heard, since it can be driven by a larger signal than those produced by guitar pickups.

Aug 19, 2013 · The EF86 was used in many preamplifier designs during the last decades of vacuum tube hi-fi development. And given pentode vacuum tubes allow appreciable amounts of negative feedback to be used without triggering instability and high-frequency rolloff due to the Miller Effect, they merely paved the way for the development of the solid state transistor power amplifier which used much larger ... Apr 22, 2012 · The EF86 is a pentode and it has a lot more gain than a triode which is normally used in a preamp. But throw two triodes in series and the gain is much more than a single pentode. What the pentode has is rich harmonics when it is overdriven. There are other pentodes that can be used in the preamp, some sound better than others though.
The EF86 tube is a pentode vacuum tube that has been used in the preamp section of a relatively small number of amplifiers over the years (notably in vintage Vox AC15s and very early AC30s). While they can sound great and have a substantially hotter output than the more common 12ax7 triode gain stage, they are notorious for being microphonic ...

A couple of those guys (Dr. Z and Mark Sampson) talk about how great the EF86 preamps sound, then whine on and on about how hard it is to find (or have made for you) a non-microphonic EF86. I'm sure I read that people who've tried the 6AU6 say is doesn't have problems with microphonics, which of course doesn't make any sense. Ef86 as guitar preamp tube So I'm in the process of converting another 60s record player into a little guitar amp and after using a 12ax7 in my last project I wanted to add a n. ef86 to this one, I've heard they are prone to microphony, is that true?

The EF86 is the standard early stage audio pre-amplifier valve. This exhibit was made by Mullard in Great Britain. Mullard designed the EF86 and it took over the frond end stage of audio amplifiers from the octal EF37A. It was first shown at the 1953 Radio Show and first used in their 5-10 amplifier from 1954. The Dirty Teen head is an 18W type amplifier with EF86 preamp. The Dirty Teen 18W amplifier is my take on the famous short-lived 18W 1965 Marshall circuit. With two ECC83 preamp channels, two EL84s in the power amp and one EZ81 as a rectifier, the original amplifier shared most of its genes with the venerable Vox AC15.

Channel 1 is the EF86 Preamp channel - It features two inputs wired in the traditional way that gives them a 6dB gain difference between them. A two-position BASS SHIFT switch is included, with position 1 voiced to the original vintage-correct bass response and position 2 voiced to tighten the bass response and reduce any muddiness during high ...
